The Monster of the Miramichi

Allan Joseph Legere was born in Chatham Head, New Brunswick on February 13th, 1948. At some point in the 1970s, Legere moved to Ontario, where he worked as a car salesman, in Winchester which is south of Ottawa. During his time in Ontario, he was living in a farmhouse in Inkerman, which was near Winchester. At some point, Legere left Ontario and returned to terrorize New Brunswick. His rampage included rape, robbery, and brutal beatings. Which happened in the years 1986 and 1989. He has a total of 5 victims.

First Murder

It was the evening of June 21st, 1986 when Legere and two accomplices, Todd Machett and Scott Curtis decided to rob a convenience store that was located in Black River Bridge, New Brunswick. The three men cut the power and entered the store. They were soon met by the elderly owners, and the men attacked. They severely beat John Glendenning and beat his wife Mary, who was also raped at the time of the attack. The trio fled the scene, but when Mary regained consciousness she discovered that John had been beaten to death. Mary, somehow found the will to crawl upstairs and call 911. The dispatcher could tell that Mary had been very shaken by the attack, and stayed on the phone with her until officers arrived at the scene. Police soon tracked down the three men. Machett pleaded guilty straight, but Legere and Curtis weren't convicted until the trial. He was given life in prison, with the chance of parole.

Escape

Allan Legere was at the Atlantic Institution located in Renouse-Quarryville serving his sentence when he came down with an ear infection, he was under the care of the Correctional Services of Canada. Therefore they were obligated to transport him to Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont Regional Hospital, located in Moncton for treatment. Somehow, Legere was able to persuade the guards to let him use the private bathroom on his own. Once alone, Legere picked the locks on his restraints. Then using a makeshift knife he held the guards at bay while he fled. Through a series of carjacking and motor vehicle theft, he managed to getaway.

More Murders

While he was at large, Legere committed a series of murders in and around Chatham, Newcastle, and other areas in the Miramichi. On May 29th, 1989, he brutally attacked and raped Annie Flam. (Her sister was also attacked but survived) He caught it on fire before he left. On October 13th, 1989 he brutally attacked and raped Linda and Donna Daughney, and set fire to their home when he left. Then finally, on November 16th, 1989, he beat Father James Smith to death. This crime spree sparked fear and panic in the province. People who lived alone were moving in with family and friends, gun sales skyrocketed, and Halloween was canceled that year, all because of this one man, this monster who was terrorizing the province. Legere was at large for seven long months. He was captured on November 24th, 1989, after a failed carjacking that started in Saint John, New Brunswick, and ended in Rogersville, New Brunswick. Rewards of $50,000 were collected for information leading to his arrest. It was in 1990, that Legere was convicted of the murders that took place while he had escaped. He was given an additional 9 years to his life sentence. Legere's case was Canada's first DNA profiling to convict a murderer.

Present Day

In the year 2015, Legere was transferred from the super maximum-security penitentiary located in Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, Quebec to the Edmonton Institution, which is located in Alberta. They say that he is currently one of 90 prisoners in the Special Handling Unit because he is despised by other inmates who hate those who have victimized women and children.

In August of 2020, Allan Legere applied for day parole. This was denied on January 13th, 2021. Allan Legere is still serving his life sentence, he is 73 years old.
